I don't
quite know that I found Bilboa as I was on my way from Laois to Dublin,
via Kilkenny county and Carlow town. I think Bilboa itself may actually
have been on the other side of the National school and I didn't go past
that cos I needed to go the other direction and that was when I saw
the Church. Up on a hill it is, and it has to be the wettest graveyard
I was ever in. It's a beautiful setting and my few photographs don't
so it justice, there are woods all round it in a hill setting and there's
a stream flowing behind it, you can't see the stream but you can hear
it. The stream runs down the side of the Church grounds. The hills,
the rain and the stream all go towards making the church grounds so
wet. I've never seen so many grave mounds except down in West Cork on
the little island. There were drains at the bottom of the Church grounds
but I seem to have forgotten to include a photo of them in this batch.
I'll put them up with the graveyard photos when I get round to that!
I always
think the deserted houses are so sad whenever I see them and I always
take photos of them which I've not yet worked out quite what I will
do with. Some of the houses belonged to ordinary people who have died
or moved on to newer places and some of them are big houses, others
'coach' houses, but this particular house lies right beside the school
and I imagine that at one stage there was an older school and this was
the Master's House.
Bilboa
itself lies just on the Kilkenny and Carlow border and the river that
flows along there is called the Dinin river, the woods are spread over
townlands called Boolvannan and Boolyrathornan, and also Red Bog. Anyway,
it's a really nice, pretty area to drive around. Placenames on these
stones include Cloghrennane (Clogrennan), Aughanure Ballylinan (Aghanure),
Augharue (Agharue) & Ballinabranna - so I guess we can take it that
I was definitely inside Carlow county!
