  Cloone (Clonmaicne), Marriage Index 1854

This is an index of the names of the people who were married in the Roman Catholic parish of Cloone (Clonmaicne) during the year 1854   The following table of marriages is transcribed from Microfilm No. 4241 held online by the National Library of Ireland accessible through their Roman Catholic Parish Register Search page.   All names and surnames given here are as I read them.  This section of the register has some first names in Latin and some in English.

If any of you have a problem with the Latin names, then I have a document online which may be of some help.

Latin Names in English

My list is sorted by the surname of the groom.  Question marks indicate letters or words I had a problem reading.  The letters ‘sic’ indicate that is how I read the letters I have typed.
[ ] indicates that the letters within the brackets are my best guess at what the letters might be.  The entry for Patritium Huslin or Heslin  was given as Patritium & Brigidam Huslin(Heslin)

Townlands are not given.

Bornacoola, Leitrim. Marriages 1836-37

Bornacoola, Leitrim:  Marriages

Bornacoola Marriage Index 1836-37

The following table of Bornacoola marriages is transcribed from Microfilm No. 4234/3 held online by the National Library of Ireland accessible through their Roman Catholic Parish Register Search page.  This is an index of the names of the people who were married in the Roman Catholic parish of Bornacoola, Co. Leitrim during the years 1836 to 1837.  This section of the register is in Latin.  This means that first names are given in Latin surname are in English.  All names given here are as I read them.  When registers are in Latin many times we see names spelled incorrectly.  I do have a page online which gives Latin names in English so you may consider looking at that if you have any problems here.

My list is sorted by the surname of the groom.  Question marks indicate letters or words I had a problem reading and I have given my best guess, dots show that there were other letters after the name which I could not read.
Place names are given in this section of the register.  For some of these marriages there are also other place names given for the man.  I have not included these.

This section of the register ends 28th September 1837 and there is a gap then until 1850.

Fenagh
Baptisms
June 5th 1825 – Oct 13th 1829
Script is clear: Child’s name, parents, sponsors. The last entries on any line and the ends of the pages are shaded, which can make it difficult to read the spellings. The entries are in English

There are some entries for 1841 just after the 1829 entries – two pages or so, the script on those is spidery and more difficult to read than the earlier entries.

Baptisms Nov 24th 1834 – April 12th 1843 follows the few pages of 1841 entries.
These baptisms are in Latin, the writing is generally legible through the ten years. In parts the ink is faded.

Baptisms : June 5th 1843 – Nov 4th 1852
Marriages: Oct 4th 1826 – Feb 18th 1832
Marriages Jan 15th 1835 – March 22nd 1842
Deaths June 1825 – Feb 21st 1832
Deaths Nov 24th 1834 – Dec 21st 1841

These entries are in Latin. The whole set of records is variable in that some pages are reasonably easy to read and others are almost impossible, either due to the script, the ink or the fact that they are in Latin. The death entries are all single lines. The townlands are not named, only dates, names and surnames for this section.

Baptisms Nov 22nd 1852- Dec 9th 1880
Marriages: Jan 17th 1844 – Feb 9th 1880
These records are in English, the townland is named, the entries are spaced.

There is an index to the Baptismal register for this parish, following on the parish records themselves as on the film. It is handwritten, single line entries, with the year of the baptism given for each name. Again, it is faded in spots and the writing can be difficult to read. The edges and ends of the pages are either shaded or faded.

Mohill
Baptisms
June 11th 1854 – Dec 23rd 1880
(also workhouse Baptisms 1846-1855)

The first two pages are actually a communion register – it’s easy enough to read. Well spaced. One year only. 1836 it gives the child’s name, parents name and sponsors names.

This got me wondering – today, groups of children make their communion on the same say – on this register there is a different date for each child, a few days to a few weeks apart. Was this the norm? Why? Until a few years ago, children here made their communion at about age 7, could it be that children made their communion when they were a certain age? Could the date on this register be the birthday for these children?

Anyone have any ideas on this? I’ve never seen a communion register before

Page three and these would seem to be the Workhouse Baptisms as they stop in 1855. The children’s names are in Latin. The writing is spidery, difficult to read and the Priest was saving paper, trying to get as much as he could onto each page.
The edges of the pages are shaded making entries at the side and bottom illegible in most instances.

The general baptismal register begins after the Workhouse one. The script is different, the capital letters being ‘flowery’ (spread all over the place) and the rest of the script is less legible. In Latin, names and no townlands
Marriages
August 28th 1854 – July 19th 1879
Burials
May 22nd 1854 – July 27th 1879

All very difficult to read – priests economising on paper, writing bad, edges of pages shaded. No townlands mentioned. In Latin, names – child, parents, sponsors.

Roman Catholic Parishes, Co. Leitrim, 1836

Baptism Records, Drumlease, Co. Leitrim, 1859-60

Ref Drumlease (Drumahaire) RC. Parish, NLI Film No. 5344

The following is indexed according to the surname of the Child. The surnames of mothers which do not appear as those of the children are listed below. All spellings are as on the parish register. Where a name was difficult to read, there are question marks. The townland names are given for the most part but overall, the script is very difficult to read and extremely faded in places. I may have made some mistakes in my transcription and some entries may have been missed. This index is intended as a guide to show surnames occurring in the parish and the townland names associated with this Catholic parish in 1840. The Catholic parish was not a fixed entity, townlands were often ‘re-assigned’ to other parishes depending on the number of people in the parish and the availability of a priest.

My notes re this particular register. In Latin, difficult film to work with because of the hand writing. This section of the film is not too faded. Placename is not given in this section of the register

Notes:

The register is in Latin, that means that the first names are all in Latin, the priests make no note as to whether daughter or son – simply ‘fill’. WHile the first names should all be standard in the spelling, there are differences – even with the same priest. It gets more confusing because while the first name should be standard so too should the father and mothers names when they are listed – a name changes in Latin when one is saying ‘of so and so’ – therefore while a father and son may have the same first names, the fathers name looks different because of the change that is made grammatically. There is no standard spelling of the name John or Mary. The name Jacobus canbe James or Jacob, I have listed both in my tables, however, James is by far the most common of these two names in Irish first names. Likewise, Maria can be Mary or Maria – Mary being by far the most common in Irish first names. Marianne can be Marian or Mary Anne and so on.

The register is difficult enough to read regardless of these name spellings, it goes through to 1841 or thereabouts and then back to 1837 at one stage. As with all registers, a suname can be spelled one way by one priest and another by a different priest or even by that same priest at different stages e.g. Winn and Wenn : Magarry and McGarry. The writing is *very* difficult to read post 1841. There are about 120-130 pages of records – but generally the writing is ‘spidery’, difficult to read, the ink is blotched and faded in spots.
