Aughnish village, Oughtmanna Civil Parish, County Clare, Ireland

AUGHNISH, a village, in a detached portion of the parish of OUGHTMANNA, barony of BURREN, county of CLARE, and province of MUNSTER, 5 miles (N. W.) from Burren ; containing 46 houses and 304 inhabitants.

This village, like others on this part of the coast, is frequented during the summer for sea bathing; it is situated on the bay of Galway and near Aughnish Point, a headland on the north side of the harbour of New Quay, projecting into the bay from the peninsula formed by the parish of Duras in the county of Galway, and forming the northern extremity of the county of Clare.

On this point is a martello tower, and there is also one on Finvarra Point, to the south-west, in another detached portion of the parish.
