a parish, in the barony of BUNRATTY, county of CLARE,
and province of MUNSTER 3 miles (S. E.) from Newmarket,
on the river Shannon, and on the mail coach road from Limerick
city to Ennis ; containing 1182 inhabitants. It comprises
2365 statute acres, as applotted under the tithe act, and contains a portion
of the rich corcass lands on the banks of the Shannon, and about 370 acres
of the Bishop’s mensal lands. The land is partly in pasture, but
chiefly in tillage, and the system of agriculture has been much improved.
It is a
vicarage, in the diocese of Killaloe,
and forms the corps of the treasurership of the cathedral of Killaloe,
and part of the union of Kilnasoolagh, in the gift of the
bishop : the rectory is part of the sinecure union of Tradree,
or Tomfinlogh, in the patronage of the Earl of Egremont.
The tithes amount to £93. 8s. 7¼d., of which £55. 7s.
7¼d., is payable to the rector, and the remainder to the vicar.
In the Roman Catholic divisions this parish forms a portion of the union or district of Newmarket: the chapel for this part of the district is a large building of modern date, situated near Ballycunneen.
