"THIS IS A CEMETERY - "

Lives are commemorated - deaths are recorded - families are reunited -
memories are made tangible - and love is undisguised. This is a cemetery.

Communities accord respect, families bestow reverence, historians seek
information and our heritage is thereby enriched.

Testimonies of devotion, pride and remembrance are carved in stone to pay
warm tribute to accomplishments and to the life - not death - of a loved one.
The cemetery is homeland for family memorials that are a sustaining source
of comfort to the living.

A cemetery is a history of people - a perpetual record of yesterday and a
sanctuary of peace and quiet today. A cemetery exists because every life is
worth loving and remembering - always.

CORK

Graveyard transcriptions have a common format, they are either listed alphabetically or as they are laid out in the graveyard. Thay give the names mentioned on the stone, transcribers normally transcribe only those stones which pre-date 1901 and stones which lie in the same plot and carry post 1901 dates tend to be included.

However, one transcriber stands out above all others in this county - or has done in the past and that is Mr. Richard Henchion of Cork. I know how long it can take to simply transcribe one small graveyard to the format above. The amount of time, energy and devotion which Mr. Henchion must have given to his works that I have seen cannot possibly be imagined. People in Ireland who transcribe graveyards get no monetary reward, at times there is some government funding available. In general, those who do this, do it for the pleasure they get from it.

Mr. Henchion has described the graveyards he has transcribed and for the most part has given family histories or local lore to go with the names on the stones. You can see the years of publication here. This list is incomplete and that will be corrected.

DUBLIN

A useful reference concerning Dublin graveyards and their records is 'Directory of Graveyards in the Dublin Area - An index and Guide to Burial Records' published by Dublin Public Libraries, 1988. ISBN 0 9468410 6 3

The list of Dublin graveyards which have been transcribed over the years is long, there are over 200 graveyards in the Dublin area including Glasnevin which has c. 1,000,000 people interred in it's grounds.

Dr. Michael T.S. Deansgrange is the largest cemetery in south Co. Dublin, while Glasnevin is the largest in north Co. Dublin.

Mr. Brian Cantwell stands out amongst those who have transcribed Irish Gravestones and Memorials. He transcribed and compiled 6 volumes of Memorial inscriptions for Co. Wexford, 4 for Co. Wicklow, 1 for Co. Clare. He compiled and edited 1 volume for South Co. Dublin with Mr. Ian T. Cantwell between the years of 1980 and 1990 and this was published in 1990.

WEXFORD

Mr. Brian J. Cantwell has transcribed all the graveyards of Co. Wexford, reading inscriptions on all stones dating pre-1900 and then those which he considered to be connected to those stones. I do not know if Mr. Cantwell read only those stones which were legible or if perhaps he cleaned them in order to be able to read them. If the latter, then all the stones in County Wexford can be considered to have been transribed. If the former, then there are still stones which need to be transcribed.
