Ballyspillane Civil Parish

described in Lewis's Topographical Directory of Ireland, 1837


BALLYSPILLANE, a parish, in the barony of BARRYMORE, county of CORK, and province of MUNSTER, 2 miles (N. W.) from Midleton; containing 577 inhabitants.

This parish comprises 2076 statute acres, as applotted under the tithe act and valued at £1263 per annum : it is chiefly under tillage, with but little waste land; the northern part is mountainous, and the soil shallow and but indifferently productive.

The living is a vicarage, in the diocese of Cloyne, and prior to the the collation of the present incumbent was part of the union of Midleton and corps of the treasurership in the cathedral of Cloyne, but is now a distinct benefice, in the patronage of the Bishop; the rectory is impropriate in G. Lukey, Esq., of Midleton. The tithes amount to £228, payable in moieties to the impropriator and the vicar. There is neither church, glebe, nor glebe-house.

In the R. C, divisions the parish forms part of the union or district of Midleton. There are some ruins of the parochial church.
