Ballyneen village, Ballymoney civil parish

BALLYNEEN, a village, in the parish of BALLYMONEY, Eastern Division of the barony of EAST CARBERY, county of CORK, and province of MUNSTER, 10 miles (W. S. W.) from Bandon ; containing 691 inhabitants.

This village is situated on the mail coach road from Bandon to Dunmanway, and on the north bank of the river Bandon, over which is a spacious bridge of ten arches: it consists of one principal street, with a shorter street branching from it towards the bridge, and in 1831 contained 121 houses, the greater number of which are tolerably well built. A few of the inhabitants are employed in the weaving of coarse linens for home consumption, and in the manufacture of cotton cord; but the greater number are engaged in agriculture. A constabulary police force has been stationed here ; and district petty sessions are held in a court-house generally every alternate Monday.

There is a place of worship for Wesleyan Methodists ; also a dispensary, which annually affords medical relief to more than 5000 patients of the surrounding neighbourhood.
