Roman Catholic Parishes, 1836
The following links lead to lists of the parishes that comprised each Diocese in 1836, the year of publication of the first 'Complete Catholic Registry Directory and Almanack' for Ireland. From that year forward we can identify those parishes that seemed to 'disappear', that is they were dissolved and the townlands that had been part of them were amalgamated with other parishes, or two parishes being 'united' with one another.
The spelling of parish names sometimes differed from that of today, these lists can help us identify placenames that are not to be found in the Townland indices which are based on the names for the various Irish census results. For some, these lists will help guide towards parishes for which there are parish records and into whose records were added those of the dissolved or united parish.
Each page also carries a table listing parishes which were listed in 1836, but not in 1931 and which also lists the 1931 spelling of the parish name where it differed from that of 1836. The county that each of the closest post towns was in is also identified in most cases.
