Note: in 1836 Lewis mentioned the following re the R.C. parish of Offerlane also known as Castletown: "The R.C. parish is co- extensive with that ot the Established Church; it is called Underwoods and contains four chapels - one at 'Cormorass', one at Rushall, one at Castletown and one at Killinure." Cormorass mentioned in this extract may be what we now call Camross. Rushall is the Pike of Rushall. Camross, the Pike of Rushall and Castletown are all within a few miles of one another. It is possible, that the very early records indexed as being for the parish of Castletown contain records for the parish of Camross. Records for Castletown begin c.1782 and contiue to 1816. There is a gap from 1816-1831. Records for Camross begin in 1816 and seem to run to 1830. Researchers would do well to check all the parish records for both of these parishes if they are interested in ancestors regardless of which parish they think they came from.

Diocese of Ossory:
The Diocese of Ossory includes county Kilkenny and portions of Laois (Queen's) and Offaly (King's).
In 1836 this Diocese had 34 parishes and in 1931 there were 41 parishes.
