Lewis Extract Index
description from Lewis's Topographical Dictionary of Ireland, 1837
Feb 9th 2005: for the moment, all the civil parishes of county Donegal (with the exception of Urney) as listed in 'A New Genealogical Atlas of Ireland' (1996, Brian Mitchell) have been transcribed from Lewis' Topographical Dictionary of Ireland (or not - depending on how Lewis described them in 1837) plus others that Lewis names as parishes whilst Mitchell doesn't. (I may not have found all the places that Lewis calls 'parishes' as yet) All Lewis spellings have been kept as they were - and these sometimes differ from the spellings used by Mitchell. Some of these parishes were known by more than one name - I hope to add an index with these various names over the coming weeks. For the moment, if you have a parish name and cannot find it listed on this particular index, then please check each of the parish links. Also, the names of Roman Catholic parishes were not necessarily the same as those of the civil parishes. Please make sure to check the various names listed for Roman Catholic Unions for each parish if you are looking for a parish and can't find it listed anywhere. Also, check the R.C. parish lists for each diocese (1836) that you will find on my county Donegal page.
Diocese of Derry - Diocese of Raphoe
In such cases as a placename is both that of a parish and a town and not a major town in the county, the description will be listed under Parish.
Towns
Ballyshannon - Buncrana - Carndonagh - Castlefinn - Letterkenny - Mount Charles - Moville
