The registration of births, deaths and all marriages commenced on January 1st, 1864. The General Register Office (GRO), which is located in Dublin, holds copies of all civil records for the whole of Ireland, from the commencement of registration, up to and including the year 1921. From 1922 onwards, the GRO holds copies of the records for the Republic of Ireland. The indices are arranged in alphabetical order, and include the following information - Surname / Christian name / Name of the Superintendent Registrar's District (in which the birth, marriage or death took place) / Volume and page number of the register in which the entry is recorded. Up to the end of 1877 the indices were arranged alphabetically, by year. From 1878 onwards each year was divided into quarters, March, June, September and December. From 1903 onwards, the index of births included the mother's maiden name. If your ancestor was born, married or died in Ireland after January 1st, 1864 (and, in the case of a non Roman Catholic marriages after April 1st, 1845) the particular event should be registered. However, many births, marriages and deaths were never registered, during the earlier years.
These tables are some lists of Surnames, names and at least the district the birth was registered in which I have collected. For some of these names I may only have been checking the registration districts for a friend during one particular year or a few years, many have no reference to the volume and page number because of this.
These are necessary to obtain an actual photocopy of the entry in the registration books and because of this those entries I have listed here simply tell those of you who look at this page that the surname and/or a particular first name are to be found in the registers for that time. You can then access this information through LDS libraries.
Where I do give volume and reference numbers I give no guarantee that I have not made any mistakes. It is up to you to check that these references are correct, so again my tables are really only of use if you would like to know if a particular person was registered in that year.
For some surnames I am interested in a particular locality and so only note the references to anyone of that surname in any registration district which would cover the county or counties I am interested in. Sometimes I have noted other people of the same surname from other localities, yet, this is not to say that I have listed every person of that surname from all localities in Ireland at any one time.
If you have volume and page number references for people of any surname and would like to submit them to me for inclusion on these tables then this may help some other researchers in the future.

To get some idea of the area (counties and townlands) covered by each of these registration districts go to IreAtlas Townland database - which based on the 1851 Index to the Townlands and Towns, Parishes and Baronies of Ireland, created by SeanRuad and hosted by TheCore.com on the Leitrim-Roscommon Genealogy Site - and key in the name of the Registration District. The result will give you a list of places under the Poor Law Union and the Poor Law Union became the Registration District.
Should you wish to see a map of this area and you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer then take a placename and go to Ireland On Line Interactive Maps Enter the place you are interested in (street, name, place even) and then when the map comes up it is possible to zoom in.
If you don't use MSIE and even if you do, you could try the Google Image Search Engine which might possibly find some ususual photographs of the area on line for you.
