Lewis Index: those places for which there are extracts from Lewis on the From Ireland Web Site
Samuel Lewis's 'Topographical Dictionary of Ireland' plublished in 1837, can help us identify places for which we may not find the name listed in any townland directory such as that on the IreAtlas web site. The spellings of placenames in these volumes are as written at that time, they differ from spellings that are found on other documentation. Lewis tells us of the various industries in areas around the country, civil and religious parishes are identified, churches described. It is an invaluable tool to the genealogist, a most interesting read for those who want to find out that bit more without having to delve into historical manuscripts. Some of the entries are but a few lines long and then others give us history, geography, annecdotes, superstitions, the life of the people in an area.
The links here will bring you to tables listing placenames sorted alphabetically, you can then go to the Lewis extracts on any county page to find the description of that place. Please note that in Ireland there are often many places of the same name in different counties, even within one county there can be more than one townland of the same name.
