Having spent some time now going through the various genealogy web sites or those which have genealogical content relating to the 32 counties of Ireland, I have this to say.

There are a number of web sites in Ireland, which give some information on each of the thirty two counties. e.g. Local Ireland, Total Ireland, the Irish Times web site. Each of these will give a certain amount of information on the county, other links for other web sites relating to the county and each has a genealogy section. For the most part, I have found that the links on any of these sites all lead back to the same place, the county Family Heritage Centre, which may or may not be given a different title or name on each site.

Then, there are the various genealogical projects, they confuse me to say the least. I believe that for the most part they are all the same as well. By that, I mean that there is very little difference in what they tell you is available for the various counties in Ireland. However, some county pages do contain transcribed material, parish records and graveyard transcriptions as well as data from other souyrces.

I get the impression from looking at everything, that everyone knows that there is this much information available for the Irish counties. Trying to find something different listed on any one of the sites is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. That is when you look to these bigger sites, produced by various organisations.

However, if you look to those web sites whose URL's you will see passing through the mail-lists - then they are where you will find your treasures, the little nuggets. County Home Pages created by individuals who have an interest in a county, people who transcribe records and put that information on line. There may be mistakes on some of those pages, but you will not find any similar information being given to you by any of the large organisations.

You will find a list of sites relating specifically to each county on the county contents pages. On this page, are some sites which stand out amongst those relating to Irish research and some links which are not listed on other 'Links' pages, but which are well worth a visit if you are looking for information from Ireland.

Google Image Search Key in a phrase and instead of URL's you will get back thumbnail images. Good to find photos of places in Ireland. Watch out though because this search engine is not entirely family friendly, the images may have an adult content! Still, I found surprising photos of places I would never have expected to find on the web - and I did not come across any 'adult content' images in the searching I did.

Ditto Another image search engine, more family friendly but with a smaller archive of images.

Alta Vista Image Search Engine Here, make sure that the family filter is on. You can find the filter in the upper right corner of Alta Vista's yellow image saerch box.

Set Dancing News - If you like Irish Music, set-dancing or are just coming to Ireland on a holiday, or even only thinking about it, then Bill Lynch's web site is a must to check out. Wher-ever we have a set dancing 'session' - for a weekend or a week, we have music to go with it - the musicians just go to these areas - and while the dancers dance in halls or pubs, music is found everywhere. Our Musicians are for the most part not paid to play, they just follow the music wherever it is, for the love of it and the 'craic' (=fun). In time, I want to put photos on this web site, showing how a 'session' will grow - one to three musicians to begin with and then more and more as an evening goes along (from children to old). Bill lists all - Irish and International, the workshops and the weekends.
