"The
modern parish of Shinrone straddles two counties, two provinces and two
baronies. It is made up of the four distinct civil parishes of Shinrone,
Kilcommon, Kilmurry Ely and Ballingarry", so sayeth the plaque giving
the History of Shinrone parish in the village of Shinrone.
I'd never
been in this part of Offaly before - mind you, I'm not too sure that I
was in Offaly, I just think that the village of Shinrone is in that county
and if someone would like to correct me then please do. I was on my way
to Ballingarry from Roscrea when I came to Shinrone. It's a pretty little
village and well kept. The weather was wonderful and there was a lady
out watering the flowers around the Roman Catholic Church and he Memorial
which is down across the road from the National school, plus, there were
lots of flowers in view.
The 'Main
street' as I call it stretches from the Roman Catholic Church to what
I think is the remnant of Cloughmoyle Castle. Down at the 'castle' there
is a little bridge which has been restored and a little garden on the
bank of the stream for those who would just like to sit beside the water.
The 'Castle' was under restoration when I visited in June 2007. As you
walk from the area of the bridge you can see St. Mary's Church of Ireland
church and graveyard up on a hill.
