County Waterford, Ireland

CIVIL PARISHES

Lisnakill

description from Lewis's Topographical Dictionary of Ireland, 1837

LISNAKILL, a parish, in the barony of MIDDLETHIRD, county of WATERFORD, and province of MUNSTER, 4 miles (W. by S.) from Waterford city ; containing 667 inhabitants.

It comprises 2462 statute acres, as applotted under the tithe act ; the soil is various, and, in the north-western extremity, slate of good quality for roofing was formerly quarried.

At Whitfield was the seat of W. Christmas, Esq., the principal landed proprietor, but the mansion has lately been taken down.

The living is a rectory, in the diocese of Waterford, united to part of the rectory of Kilmeaden, together constituting the corps of the treasurership of Waterford, in the patronage of the Bishop. The tithes amount to £160, and the glebe comprises rather more than 5½ acres ; there is neither church nor glebe-house.

About 130 children are taught in a school at Butlerstown, under the National Board.

At the time of the Down survey there was an ancient castle at this place ; and in a Danish fort, at no great distance, were found two curious earthen vessels, in one of which was a golden bracelet. At Whitfield, in a vast heap of stones, are two conical apartments built of stone, and supposed to have been used as tombs.
