Notes:
The register is in Latin, that means that the first names are all in Latin, the priests make no note as to whether daughter or son – simply ‘fill’. WHile the first names should all be standard in the spelling, there are differences – even with the same priest. It gets more confusing because while the first name should be standard so too should the father and mothers names when they are listed – a name changes in Latin when one is saying ‘of so and so’ – therefore while a father and son may have the same first names, the fathers name looks different because of the change that is made grammatically. There is no standard spelling of the name John or Mary. The name Jacobus canbe James or Jacob, I have listed both in my tables, however, James is by far the most common of these two names in Irish first names. Likewise, Maria can be Mary or Maria – Mary being by far the most common in Irish first names. Marianne can be Marian or Mary Anne and so on.
The register is difficult enough to read regardless of these name spellings, it goes through to 1841 or thereabouts and then back to 1837 at one stage. As with all registers, a suname can be spelled one way by one priest and another by a different priest or even by that same priest at different stages e.g. Winn and Wenn : Magarry and McGarry. The writing is *very* difficult to read post 1841. There are about 120-130 pages of records – but generally the writing is ‘spidery’, difficult to read, the ink is blotched and faded in spots.
