Abbeyleix Church of Ireland Gravestones

Abbeyleix Church of Ireland Gravestones

These 198 photographs were taken in July 2007.  All gravestones that could be read at that time were photographed.  There were a few stones which were illigible.

During the 1995-96 period Abbeyleix Church of Ireland graveyard was visited and all stones which had a date that was pre 1901 were transcribed.  That is all information that could be read from those stones was written down.  By 2007 when the stones were photographed some of the stones read in the earlier years may no longer have been legible.  Please consult the document which contains the typed up material from 1995-1996.
1995-1996 Abbeyleix Church of Ireland Gravestone Transcriptions

Some of these photographs are close ups of the script on the stone.  All photographs are reduced in size. Full size and unwatermarked copies of these photographs are available (for use in records and printing) for a small fee as listed below.   Contact Dr. Jane Lyons with reference to the relevant gravestone(s), graveyard and county for further information.
3.50 Euro for 1 photograph
5.00 Euro for up to 3 photographs
10 Euro up to 8 photographs

Surnames have been given to each photograph and the phorographs here are *almost* in alphabetical order.  The number in each photograph indicates the number of times the surname has occurred as the first surname on a stone, e.g. Galbraith 1 = first Galbraith stone indexed.  Galbraith 8 = eighth Galbraith stone indexed.

Please note that it has been my finding that members of the Church of Ireland quite often live in one parish but then ‘go home’ to the place their family came from when they die.  That is they are taken from the parish they lived in and brought to the parish their family came from to be buried.  If you expect to find a family in this graveyard and don’t, please consult my name index to see if the surname you are looking for occurs in another parish.

Graveyards I’m Working On – Dr. Jane Lyons

Some people might think that all I do is go around transcribing parish records, taking photographs and then spending hours sitting at a computer creating webpages and announcing them.

That’s not all at all :)

It’s actually very difficult to completely work one graveyard when you are on your own, so most days when I go to a graveyard I go in and spend an hour or two taking photographs and then go off home.  It can take me weeks to finish a graveyard.  I’m actually working on one big project at the moment which takes in 8 graveyards or cemeteries in the Diocese of Ossory, I think it is 6 in Laois (Queen’s Co.) and two in Kilkenny.  I timed myself recently just working in one graveyard on my own and it took me 30 mins to cover 11 stones for this project – there are approx 150 stones in the graveyard and that means that if I continue to  work by myself it would take me approx 7 hours to complete the field work.  After that, there is the naming the photographs and creation of the index.

Right now, it is 09.10, I sat at my computer at 06.30 and since I sat down I have written one reasonably long email, looked at some stuff on Facebook and also named and indexed 20 stones from one graveyard.  I have 40 photographs left to work on in this graveyard, then I have to go back and re-take a few photographs for ones which did not come out too legible and then I can put copies of all these photographs on my website.  I did index the stones that were pre 1901 in this graveyard back in the 1996-98 period, but now, we’ll have everything.  So far, my name index has 1081 entries.

I’m pasting a list of graveyards/cemeteries that I am working on here.  Some of these I have almost finished the naming an indexing of.  Counaguneen is the one I am going to get to straight after I finish with Rathdowney.  The graveyards in Durrow were transcribed back in the days when I had pen and paper as was Aughmacart, Galmoy and Dysart Wooden Bridge – once I’m finished with the photographs then we will have information on stones that can’t be read any more as well as all information on stones that can be.

There are actually a few more folders on one of my other computers which I have not included here but we won’t mind that.

I just wanted to give you some idea of how long it takes to do this work and that it is being done, even if slowly.

I also garden and walk the dogs

Marriage Records, Durrow, Co. Laois, 1861-62

There are not very many records in this marriage index but they are interesting in that the place that the Groom came from is listed and so is the place that the Bride came from.  The records are in English and full first names are given.  I have left all spellings as I read them from the records.  Question marks indicate the letters or parts of a word that I had difficulty with.  I have left the records in chronological order and not sorted them alphabetically.

This index was created using microfilm 5014 at the National Library of Ireland.

The LDS did not have a copy of these records according to my notes.

Attanagh Village, Co. Laois Photographs

There I was sure that all my older gravestone photographs are online and a few minutes ago I saw some photographs of the church in Attanagh posted to the The Country Church page on Facebook, so off I go to link that page in to my Attanagh Church photographs AND no photographs online!!  My index to the names that I could read out in Attanagh is online, but not the photographs :(

My apologies to anyone with an interest in Attanagh and here are photographs of the village but not the gravestones.  They’re going to take little while to get online as very few could actually be read and I want to check through them again.

Before I post these, the thing about Attanagh is that it is on the very very edge of Co. Laois as you travel from Durrow to Ballyouskill.  It’s probably only 3 or 4 kilometres from Durrow, 5 mins drive away.

1538 Grave Slab, Eirke, Ossory Diocese

A friend of mine told me that one of the oldest gravestones in the Diocese of Ossory was in this graveyard one day – I said to him, “Eirke?  You mean that Protestant church I can see as I trip from Rathdowney to Johnstown, out there near Galmoy?”  His reply was that it had once been a Protestant church but had been consecrated and that he had gone to mass there as a child.

So me, being interested in graveyards, trotted out to this church one day and it is actually such a pretty location.  It’s Eirke and that’s in County Kilkenny, but it’s only a few miles from Rathdowney which is in County Laois and my friend, he lived out there in the Galmoy area, but he used to come to school in Rathdowney (that’s just a bit of news for you all as to how our counties and boundaries work.).  The first day I went out I just enjoyed the graveyard, it is so peaceful, I did take some photographs and I did find a stone dated 1713 and that is one of the oldest stones I have ever found (there is a 1600+ one over in Stradbally)…..

I didn’t find any stone older than that.  One day then I was talking to a friend of mine who is an undertaker and he asked me had I found that stone and told me it was dated 1530 – and of course when I heard that date I told myself “you have to find it”

Then, yesterday, off we went over again, a beautiful day.  I sent my friend a text asking him if he could tell me where the stone was – then as I stood in front of a grave trying to read the older part I turned around and spotted a date “1538”

This stone is labelled a ‘grave slab’ – it cannot be read.  It is enclosed and the marker that gives the date sits over the slab.

Grave slab of John Morris, Baunballinlough, and his wife Katherine. 1538:
