Bog Burst, Randalstown, Co. Antrim, 1835

.D.1835, September 17. Fairloch Moss, Randalstown, Co. Antrim.

(A very large bog overlooking a. valley. )- All day a portion of it swelled up till the the convexity was 30 feet in height; at 5 p.m with a sound like a loud, rushing wind, it sank several feet, and a collection of tufts, mud, and water moved N.E., not rapidly, and soon stopped. It swelled up again, and about midday on the 19th, it again burst with a similar noise and the flow crept on till the 21st. when it ceased till the 23rd, being interrupted by ditches; on the 23rd, at 3 p.m., it suddenly rushed forward. Continuing, it surrounded a cottage 10 feet deep, rose over the Belfast-Londonderry coach road, crossed it with a width of 300 yards, and poured over the far bank in a cascade, and continued down the valley till it reached the River Maine, which it dammed temporarily, and killed all the fish. The flow into the Maine did not cease till Sept. 28. The deposited area of bog was three-quarters of a mile long, and 200 to 300 yards wide; with a maximum depth of 30 feet. The place where the bog had swelled up to 30 feet, afterwards sunk 20 feet below its original level, and a small pool occupied the hollow\”

Roman Catholic Parishes Diocese of Cashel and Emly, Co. Waterford, 1846

This pages differs from my 1836 R.C. parish listing in a number of ways. I have not tried to list the counties that the closest post town is found in and I have not tried to compare this listing either with the 1836 listing or the 1931 listing.

I have however, included extra information on the Diocese as found in the 1846 Roman Catholic Directory on convents and nunneries or academies if mentioned – or, as it is put in the directory – \’The State of Religion\’

Baptism Records, Dungarvan, Co. Waterford, 1838

National Library of Ireland film number 2469. Index to all names found these records for 1838 and miscellaneous 1872-77. This register is in Latin. For 1838, the child’s name, parents names and Sponsors(Godparent’s) names are given, but no address (townland). The names of most children baptised in 1838 were taken. Mother’s, Fathers, and Sponsors were noted for Foley, Fitzgerald and some other surames over all years. For the most part the register is reasonably legible except at the bottom of the pages. Some entries (or parts of) from this section of any page may be missing from this index. A townland or address is given in most instances in the 1870 registrations.

Baptism Records, Cloughjordan, Co. Tipperary, 1835-37

National Library of Ireland film number 2481, 2482

Baptisms:Bapt Aug 25 1833 – Nov 3 1858

Nov 5th, 1858 – Dec 26th, 1880
Marriages May 22 1833 – Nov 17 1858

Jan 7th, 1859 – Nov 25th, 1880

Book before these parish records dating 1829 – notes re monies received from different parishoners

In Latin to front of books

The first pages of this register are a Marriage register whilst the cover title on the film would indicate that it is all a parish register. The first marriage record dates, fit in with the dates given on the title (as above) for baptismal register.

On the cover pages of the actual register It sttesin Latin that this is the register of ‘Moderny, Ardcrony, Ballygibbon, Kil?rodan , Rathurles 1833 beginning May 22nd’

A few pages into the film (register) there is this note:
“Register of Baptisms from 1st. November 183. B. Dunn P.P.”

The format of the registrations is as follows:
8th Nov. Martin – Thos. Hayes. Margt. Ryan. Sp. Stephen Ryan, Mary Healy

The first part of the entry = the date of baptism.
Following in order:
The child’s name.
The father’s name and surname
The mother’s name and surname
Sp. = Sponsors = today’s Godparents
Names and Surname of the first sponsor
Name and surname of the second Sponsor.
No address/townland listed in the earliest registrations, whilst it is in later ones

Each page, as we see it on the film, is actually two pages of the register itself. There may be pages missing. 1835 and 1836 are ‘mixed up’ in a manner of speaking – it may be to do with the way that the register was filmed, but, one side of a page as you view it, the entries may be for November 1835, the other side, September 1836

The following entry, follows that for the 8th November 1835 as above. There is no date, but, there is a number. Usually, in such a case, the number is taken to be the next ‘date’. However, the numbers on this register don’t seem to fit in to a date ‘pattern’ i.e. follow one another consecutively.

15. Mary – Fred Friend, Biddy Hogan sp. Ti. Hagan. Anny Keating.

One final note – Take the comment “‘Moderny, Ardcrony, Ballygibbon, Kil?rodan , Rathurles 1833 beginning May 22nd’

In the Roman Catholic directory of 1846, there is no parish that is called ‘Cloughjordan’ listed. There are actually no parishes of any of the names listed. There is a parish called ‘Aderney’ for which the closest post town is Cloughjordan. Is ‘Aderney’ = Ardcroney?

I worked with this register for only a short time, and listed below are the names of the children who were baptised in this parish during 1835 and some of 1836. The least this will give you is some indication of the surnames that were to be found in this register. A better study, would show placenames for years after 1836.

This college forms two separate departments, the one for Ecclesiastics, the other for Catholic youth, destined for other liberal professions and secular pursuits. The studies in the Ecclesiastical house embrace Scripture, Theology, Moral, Natural and Experimental Phiolosophy, Rhetoric, Ancient and Modern languages and History. The course in the lay-house will include the usual branches of a Classical, Mathematical and Mercantile education, after which the more advanced pupils ca, at the desire of parents, and guardians, pass two years more in the school of Rhetoric and Philosophy, thereby enjoying all the advantages, without the sacrifice of time and expense attendant upon a University education. The moral discipline is such as to impress on the mind the saving truths of the Catholic religion, and to promote habits of piety, order and industry. The terms are moderate and are known by application to the said Rev. President, or Professors of this College.

Proper parish register – in Latin – gives date of birth and then baptismal date
e.g Die 15th Septembris 1851 nata et die 20th, septembris baptizata est Maria filia Thomas ?Morly et Catharina Conway(olim )…conjugum… a me Petrus Geraghty Paschus
Patrimus fuit: Joannes Neila Matrina fuit Anna Fahy
Last entry in this manner is an 1870 one then a few pages of all squished together – the 1871 entries? Can’t read

Note: the index says some pages missing and that there are several groups of entries for various dates. This register has entries ‘mixed up’, i.e. one part of a page or a page can be for one year, the next for two or three later and then it goes back to the earlier year. Some notes have been made re changes in years through these extracts
One of the thin, long falling to pieces kind of registers!

Notes:

The register is in Latin, that means that the first names are all in Latin, the priests make no note as to whether daughter or son – simply ‘fill’. WHile the first names should all be standard in the spelling, there are differences – even with the same priest. It gets more confusing because while the first name should be standard so too should the father and mothers names when they are listed – a name changes in Latin when one is saying ‘of so and so’ – therefore while a father and son may have the same first names, the fathers name looks different because of the change that is made grammatically. There is no standard spelling of the name John or Mary. The name Jacobus canbe James or Jacob, I have listed both in my tables, however, James is by far the most common of these two names in Irish first names. Likewise, Maria can be Mary or Maria – Mary being by far the most common in Irish first names. Marianne can be Marian or Mary Anne and so on.

The register is difficult enough to read regardless of these name spellings, it goes through to 1841 or thereabouts and then back to 1837 at one stage. As with all registers, a suname can be spelled one way by one priest and another by a different priest or even by that same priest at different stages e.g. Winn and Wenn : Magarry and McGarry. The writing is *very* difficult to read post 1841. There are about 120-130 pages of records – but generally the writing is ‘spidery’, difficult to read, the ink is blotched and faded in spots.
