Nov 5th, 1858 – Dec 26th, 1880
Marriages May 22 1833 – Nov 17 1858
Jan 7th, 1859 – Nov 25th, 1880
Book before these parish records dating 1829 – notes re monies received from different parishoners
In Latin to front of books
The first pages of this register are a Marriage register whilst the cover title on the film would indicate that it is all a parish register. The first marriage record dates, fit in with the dates given on the title (as above) for baptismal register.
On the cover pages of the actual register It sttesin Latin that this is the register of ‘Moderny, Ardcrony, Ballygibbon, Kil?rodan , Rathurles 1833 beginning May 22nd’
A few pages into the film (register) there is this note:
“Register of Baptisms from 1st. November 183. B. Dunn P.P.”
The format of the registrations is as follows:
8th Nov. Martin – Thos. Hayes. Margt. Ryan. Sp. Stephen Ryan, Mary Healy
The first part of the entry = the date of baptism.
Following in order:
The child’s name.
The father’s name and surname
The mother’s name and surname
Sp. = Sponsors = today’s Godparents
Names and Surname of the first sponsor
Name and surname of the second Sponsor.
No address/townland listed in the earliest registrations, whilst it is in later ones
Each page, as we see it on the film, is actually two pages of the register itself. There may be pages missing. 1835 and 1836 are ‘mixed up’ in a manner of speaking – it may be to do with the way that the register was filmed, but, one side of a page as you view it, the entries may be for November 1835, the other side, September 1836
The following entry, follows that for the 8th November 1835 as above. There is no date, but, there is a number. Usually, in such a case, the number is taken to be the next ‘date’. However, the numbers on this register don’t seem to fit in to a date ‘pattern’ i.e. follow one another consecutively.
15. Mary – Fred Friend, Biddy Hogan sp. Ti. Hagan. Anny Keating.
One final note – Take the comment “‘Moderny, Ardcrony, Ballygibbon, Kil?rodan , Rathurles 1833 beginning May 22nd’
In the Roman Catholic directory of 1846, there is no parish that is called ‘Cloughjordan’ listed. There are actually no parishes of any of the names listed. There is a parish called ‘Aderney’ for which the closest post town is Cloughjordan. Is ‘Aderney’ = Ardcroney?
I worked with this register for only a short time, and listed below are the names of the children who were baptised in this parish during 1835 and some of 1836. The least this will give you is some indication of the surnames that were to be found in this register. A better study, would show placenames for years after 1836.
