Johnstown Public Cemetery
Co. Kilkenny

This cemetery is on the outskirts of Johnstown village and initially it was photographed in 2012 however some gravestones were not included.  Over the last few months, I have returned, photographed the stones that had been missed and checked for deaths recorded over the last few years.

There are 681 people buried in this cemetery up to 9th May 2017.  Forty two of these people have 2 first names, everyone else has one first name and then there are 36 nicknames listed with the first name.  There is one stone which has the script written in the Irish language and there are a total of twelve people who have first names in Irish.  The oldest stone carries a date of 1894.

The most common first names are as follows:
Ladies : Mary(54), Margaret (27), Bridget (25) , Catherine (21), Kathleen(10) and Ellen (10).
If we include the name Kate with Catherine then the two surnames rise to 29
Males: Michael & John (44) ; James(36), Patrick (31), William(22), Thomas (13), Martin (13)

The most common surnames with the numbers listed after the name are Ryan (42) ; Holohan(18) ; Henderson(16) ; Dalton & Broderick (14) ; Dowling(12) ; Walsh, Phelan Delaney & Dollard (11); Carroll, Moore & Skehan (10)

Where you see a ? it means that I was not 100% sure of the exact letter or word.
