Church,
Modreeny,
Co. Tipperary,
Ireland.
Lewis Topographical Dictionary (1837) tells us “MODREENY, a parish, in the barony of LOWER ORMOND, county of TIPPERARY, and province of MUNSTER, 3 miles (S. S. E.) from Burris-o’-Kane, on one of the public roads from Nenagh to Parsonstown; containing, with the town and district parish of Cloghjordan, 4306 inhabitants.”
and of the Churches he says “The church was rebuilt in 1828…….In the R. C. divisions the parish forms part of the union or district of Cloghjordan; the chapel of Modreeny, which stands on an eminence in the townland of Coolnamanna, is a handsome modern edifice.”
The unusual thing about this church is that the tower is within the area that used to have the body of an older church and right inside the remnant of the older church are found gravestones. I’ve tried to get the image of the gravestones, plus I’ve photographed the broken windows. Inside, one can see memorials on the walls. I would describe this as a ‘sad’ church.
