Parish records do not all contain the same information – some list only the names of those directly involved in the event – some list the townlands or addresses of these people – some marriage records will list the names of the parents of those being married and the towland that they came from – while, then there are parish records that list only the names of the people inivolved in the event giving no indcation as to where they lived.

Where anything is known as to the state of the film – i.e. whether the script is eay to read, the ink faded, the entries clearly defined, then this information is listd on these pages – it will be added to as time goes by. Some indication is also give as to the information contained on the film, however, this can only be taken to refer to the time frame that the extracts cover as different Priests changed the format of their entries.

Please note, that while it may be very exciting to discovre that records exist for the parish you are interested in, continuously from the mid-1700’s to 1880 – do not place too much emphasis on that fact, records that are so old tend to be in bad condition, sometimes so faded as to be illegible. Unfortunately, the same, unfortunately can also be said for some records that were created in the mid-1800’s.

Comments on these registers from Joanne Mitchel :

“”For this parish it contains the following:

Marriages 1867-1880
Baptisms 1855-1880

From what I have seen so far, the records are neatly kept in preformatted ruled and lined books which have Latin headings for each column. They give child’s name, parents’ names, sponsors’ names and date.

Some transcripts are on-line here:

Joanne Mitchell Website has made the following comments re this parish register:

“”Whilst the quality writing is dependent on the hand writing of the priest in question and entries are generally quite close together, I did not find them too hard to read, with the exception of one section in the marriage register where the writing was in a very poor hand. The condition of the registers seems to be quite good and the microfilming clear.

The registers cover from 1827 to 1880 for baptisms and from 1829 to 1880 for marriages. This is as far as the LDS has on film. Later dates are available elsewhere I believe. There is a gap in the records around 1832/3 and a note in the register that this was due to the cholera epidemic which hit about that time.

It is my understanding from a local source that these records would also cover the neighbouring RC parish of Killimer until 1854 (Killimer records start in 1859). Even past this date up to the present time it is not uncommon, I am told, for those living in the parish of Killimer to have their children baptised or to be married in Kilrush, so the register is relevant to both parishes to some extent.

The format used in the registers for baptisms is day of the month (month and year being noted at the top of the page or the start of each month), child’s name, father’s full name, mother’s name and maiden surname, sponsors’ name(s). After about 1837 a townland address is included, however there is a gap c1850s where addresses were omitted for a few years.

The format for marriages is more variable and can contain merely the names of the couple marrying and the date or may contain details such as:

“”Matthew O’Neill son of John O’Neill, Killeymer and Bridget Costello, servant to Mr Michl Brew married at the priest’s house in the presence of Edward Costello, John O’Neill and Anthony O’Dea””

Sometimes the fathers’ names were not included or only one is stated as in the above example. Sometimes an occupation was included (although generally only in the earliest years of the register). If one of the parties marrying was not from Kilrush, the name of their parish was stated rather than a townland address.

Some websites which contain transcribed material from the Kilrush parish registers are:

http://homepage.eircom.net/%7Ejohnbquigley/GenealogyPage1.htm

(Also contains transcripts for the parish of Kilmacduane, Co. Clare and other resources relevant to these areas)

http://wexlababe.home.att.net/table_of_contents.htm

Kathryn’s site has transcriptions for many parishes in Counties Clare and Limerick.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~plawrence/KilrushBapt.html

This page also contains transcriptions, however I disagree with the comments at the start. At no point did I find the film faded or illegible, nor did there seem to be a gap in the records, except for the years I mentioned during the Cholera epidemic when the register wasn’t kept.

I have just finished transcribing all the entries for the surnames McKnight and O’Neill from the registers, but am still collating them. I am considering putting them on my own website, in which case, I’ll send you a link when I’m done.

LDS film 979696 also includes parts of registers for other parishes in Co. Clare””
